Intro : Alex Kidd was in most cases build in the Sega Master System but you can find it in cartdridge format too. The game was one of the best on the system. Even better than the Sonic games ported from Genesis. Visuals : The game have average visuals for the system (the system is known for its beautiful color palette even for an 8bit console so the game still look good for an 8bit game overall). Alex and monsters sprites are tiny but still do the job, the world map is really cool, the backgrounds are most of the time empty but clean. The game got a 'cute' feel. Sound : The musics are limited to 4 or 5 but they are all very catchy. Sound effects are for most parts well done and funny sometimes (death sound for boss). Level design and level art : Good design overall, it's like a plateformer but not with the dynamic of a Mario game, it's a little more with exploration stuff : you have to collect the more money you can to buy stuff so you don't go though levels really quick most of the time (but you can do this if you want). The levels are quite diverse : vertical level, horizontal level, water level, motorbike level, ship level, helicopter level, ... and there is a lot of environements : plains, sea, cave, castle, swamps, town... There is some hidden passages, which leads to treasure or to new levels which are hard too find but you are really rewarded when you find one : you think you are the smater gamer here ! Gameplay : various enemies with one you'll hate and fear (the witch !) and sadistics cool traps in castle (closed room with spikes or water ! How cruel !) The game is fun to play, killing enemies is a bit monotonous though : no sound played and visual feedback when you hit them most of the time (some Boss are ok) it seems they could had an extra effect to give the player the feeling of power. The game is hard so be prepared to lose and start all over again. There is a trick to "buy" a continue at the game over screen for the less hardcore players, use it ! ;) The game takes maybe 1 hour to complete in a sitting. But you won't be able to master it the first time, the game got a good replay value. Controls : not so good compared to the bests of the era (Mario for example) but not so bad for its time. You'll be use to it fast but sometimes you die because the controls are not really intuitives. They are still ok. Overall : Very good game for the 8bit generation. Must have on the console, one of the best game on the Master system (surely in my top 5). The series is not the best (a lot of the other games are not so great) but this is the best one of the series. Buy it on Master system or on your Wii Virtual console ! For : -player who like arcade, old school gaming -player who like colorful visuals and cute characters -players who like hardcore game -player who want to know what was the first mascot of Sega before Sonic and why... ;)Read full review
Alex Kidd is the Sega Master System's Mascot before Sonic the Hedgehog was introduced in the 90's. This game is the best out of the series of Alex Kidd and was the first one to be made. He was used to do battle with the Nintendo's Mario, but failed because of bad marketing on Sega's part. Also, Nintendo controled the Video Game Market with some legal and illegal tactics after the fall of atari. I feel that this game is far better than Super Mario Brothers for the Nes. It was produced and put on the market in 1986. The graphics, storyline and music is far better then Super Mario. If you want to play a classic 8- bit game, play Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Thanks, Master Mark S. Kanaar
Hard to judge quality from just pictures so when it arrived I was impressed
